Our Festivals Enjoyment or Nuisance?

Its 11.45 p.m in the Night. Time to go to bed, to close your eyes and just go to sleep after day’s tiring hard work is already passed. Sleep is still miles away. You know the reason? Ganapati immersion procession of Sarvajanic Ganeshotsav Madal which started around 8.00 p.m is still on. People are still dancing on the same spot with loud music and firecrackers in between for last 3 ½ hours. They are still inside the lane. When will they reach endpoint ? How long it will continue? Its never ending story.

My son has to go to college. I have to go to work. There are few sick old persons around. We all are helpless. Can we do anything about it except just listening?. Will my request to move the procession further will be accepted in good sprit ?

Why they cannot start procession early and finish it off early.

Our festivals. How much is enjoyment and how is much nuisance? Only Lord Ganesha knows.

WORLD HERITAGE UPDATE. LET US PRESERVE POTHOLES

May be Pune Mahanagarpalika and our politicians with lots of promises and assurances should apply UNESCO's Wolrd Heritage Committee to include Roads in Pune with full of Potholes in the List of World Heritage in Danger.

We can represent that those pothole are in existence from the era of Adilshahi Rulers and we have never really tried very hard to fill them up.

After the roads are placed in the list of World Heritage in Danger, the ASI can formulate management and conservation plan for the site. Reduction in motor traffic could be one of them.

Let us preserve the potholes.

Not Enough

There were not enough potholes so we can find people digging a few more.

Pluto Is Demoted to ‘Dwarf Planet’

After years of wrangling and a week of bitter debate, astronomers voted on a sweeping reclassification of the solar system. In what many of them described as a triumph of science over sentiment, Pluto was demoted to the status of a “dwarf planet.” In the new solar system, there are eight planets, at least three dwarf planets and tens of thousands of so-called “smaller solar system bodies,” like comets and asteroids.

Oh No. What will happen to our Navagraha Shanti rituals ? We will have to change it now to Astagraha Shanti ! ! My god we may even have to rewrite our horoscopes.

We should have reprsenented our case at the meeting of the International Astronomical in Prague to include Rahu and Ketu as Planents.

Top 11 reasons behind the Blog pandemic !

This is my first post on this Blog as a contributor and I feel like a newly wedded bride. I am not sure if I am allowed to post an article which I have already posted to my personal blog- www.worldofindia.blogspot.com earlier, but I thought the subject is so interesting (and apt in today's times) that I should go ahead.

This post was written as part of Darren Rowse's group writing project on Problogger.net. Enjoy.....

Top researchers list 11 reasons behind the Blog pandemic

-Most people who Blog are sure that they have 'gifts‘, which are waiting to be 'discovered'. Finally, all these people have hit upon a publisher who won't (or to be more precise- can't) say 'No'. So Bloggers conveniently take that as a 'Yes'.

-Many people who would normally quit Blogging a month after they have started, hear about people like Darren Rowse and their “six figure incomes“. Hope then springs eternal in the human heart.

-If we don't write and read and link with each other's Blogs, who else will?

-Blogging does not need any technical expertise, as long as you can manage to press CTRL+C and CTRL+V, in close succession, repeatedly. The rest is mere detail.

-Bloggers are entrepreneurs who want to help the earth. They believe in forward and backward integration. They can produce content, become their own readers, click their own ads and often write comments to their own articles. In other words they can produce and consume in an endless eco-sustainable manner.

- If you are unemployed, Blogging gives you a license to tell your mother-in-law that you are now a freelance 'writer'.

- To get girlfriends, kiss & tell, to solicit sex, to dream of making money sitting at home, get cheap thrills from virtual fights with virtual enemies, acquire bragging rights, copying rights, squatting rights - in other words, everything that you always wanted to do but were too bald and boring to try.

-To be the ‘Expert’ and ‘Thought leader’ on a range of topics you scarcely have a clue about.

-Even if your life sucks, you can still manage to make people feel jealous of you, after they read your posts or your profile.

-So that you can help guys like Darren Rouse make their millions, under the ostensible reason of helping you make the same.

- It is an excellent addition to your already considerable nuisance value.

Latent Economic Strength of India

After a long time

Hi Folks,
I have moved to London now. Right now got some time so writing from a internet cafe at Leicester Square. I miss pune. I miss everything in Pune (except for few more pot holes the rains and PMC might have created on roads). You know what, London can compete with Pune for some strange hoardings. For example - Press the Door Bell only once, Bikes attactched to the rellings will be removed etc. I don't know who is original in this. Anyways....

I am back in London after almost 4 years. I love this city and right now weather in perfect...
See you soon guys....

Till then take care...Don't drive and don't walk on Pune roads....

Deaths ,Broken Bones on D-Day

Reports in various Newspapers on Govinda / Dahi Handi in Mumbai.

MAHARASTRA TIMES - 3 dead and around 50 govinda’s injured.
From afternoon KEM Hospital and Sion Hospital were flooded with injured Govindas.

LOKSATTA – More than 100 govinda’s injured.

TIMES OF INDIA – A RISKY SPORT – DEATH, BROKEN BONES ON D-DAY.

It was that day of the year when hospitals had to work overtime again. Unfortunately this year revellers from the streets joined those attempting to break dahi handis in crowding emergency and orthopedic wards. Fifteen year old Prabhadevi would-be Govinda Lakan Gadke died after falling from the truck on which he was travelling; it braked, sending him crashing on the tarmac and he was crushed under the wheels of another vehicle. Nine year old Nimisha Khambe traveling pillion on father’ scooter to reach the venue of dahi handi at Dadar, died after the two wheeler was hit by a truck that was ferrying other govindas. And a BEST bus ran over 24 old Mohammad Raqif sheik who was watching a dahi handi being broken near has Ghatkopar residence. Others, who fell while attempting to break the handis, were more fortunate. Nine year old Mubark Sheikh a govinda from Worli had almost reached the 40 foot high pot of curd at Parel venue when he fell down from the top of human pyramid. Another young student was brought to Sion Hospital’s emergency ward with two broken wrists.

This is precisely what happens every year on Gopalkala Day while attempting to break dahi handis. There is no limit for the height at which Dahi Handis are fixed. There are no safety Rules, Regulations, Norms. No safety precautions taken. An injury at the time of practices goes unnoticed. The prizes are offered are in lakhs of rupees which entice young crowd. Our politicians try to make use of this festival for their political gains.

WORST IS WE RISK LIFE OF YOUNG KIDS OF 6-9 YEARS OLD TO CLIMB ON THE UPPERMOST LAYER OF THE HUMAN PYRAMID TO BREAK DAHI HANDI.

We can try to minimize the risk with the help of mountaineers who use belay, peg while climbing. We must ensure that Trained First Aid persons are present on all locations. Doctors, Ambulances should be available at venue where for breaking dahi handi, human pyramids needs more that 4 layers. We can even think about Safty net building around.

In fact the height at which dahi handi is tied up must be restricted by Law.

GOVINDA ALA RE ALA

Akbar Birbal and potholes

We all know story of Akbar and Birbal and Crow. Akbar asked question on how many crows are there in the city. Birbal answered that at present right now it's 300,000.00 crows. Akbar asked him how can you be sure ? Birbal said You my please confirm the same yourself. If count is more or less, eighter crows have migrated in or out of the city.

This time Punekar's question was how many potholes are at present found on the citiroads ?

Its less than last year . That the precise answer they received. Last year potholes were 300,000.00 sq.feet. This year's potholes are 60,000.00 sq.feet.
I am little bit confused. what's the oveall total. Is it 360,000.00 or 3000,000.00 or 60,000.00 sq.ft. ? ooooooooooooops my maths. Also is there any balance carried forward this year out of last years potholes ? How about pothole that has been filled or claimed to be filled last year ? How do you count potholes ? Do you actully physically go on counting like 1,2,3,4,5............................................300,000 or just take a measurement tape found with Road Contractors and measure the area ? Is there any tender taken out for counting pothole in PUNE ? Its so confusing. You know.

On a serious note , for my injured and painful back just one and only one pothole was enough. more than enough.

My DOCTOR IS HAPPY.

Market Milestone

Today Indian equity markets achieved a significant milestone. BSE Sensex closed above 11000 mark while NSE NIFTY closed above 3200 mark. Experts consider these levels very significant for recovery of Markets. It struggled near these marks for last couple of weeks. Now it has to stay above this mark for few more days. That will lure the global investorsd back in Indian Market. And we will again start getting the attention worldover, that we deserve. Why this feat is again significant is that we are recovering in a grim global scenario. Oil is priced at $77 a barrel and there is Fed Meet tomorrow where they will deceide about raising US interest rares, that is directly going to affect each and evryone in this world. Let's keep our fingers crossed for those good old days before May 2006.

Ground Realty

This actually has been a subject of recent discussions. Pune's property boom! Now this is implicit that the boom as been driven majorly by the increasing salaries in the city. Of which, a major factor has been the IT surgence. But the another factor was the lowered house loan rates.
Typically before the banks hiked their loan rates, floating interest rate was 9.0 % and fixed interests rate was 10.5 %. Now even after the hike of 50 basis points, will demand a monthly rise of average 500 Rs, depends on the loan you are opting for. Now if the household monthly income of salaried professionals is touching 50,000/-for Non-IT and about 1,00,000/- fo IT, it doesnt sounds like a big deal shelling out 20,000/- in EMI's,does it?
Analysts believe that its ok till the rates dont exceed Rs. 3000/sq.feet. The rates will eventually stabilise below that. But I dont personally think that the boom is going to come crashing down in the near future. At least in down-town Pune.
What do you guys think?

Road Inspection

Hey Guys!
Our PMC is improving. After much hullabaloo, the authorities have finally decided to
inspect the city roads.
Though I wonder what they are going to inspect, except that stretch between the potholes. Anyway's, we should appreciate the pro-active measure taken by the concerned authorities.
I sincerely wish they hit the roads and not roadblocks!
